Today, Nelson Mandela is celebrating his 94th birthday. A man who spent a huge part of his life fighting for racial equality in South Africa, his name is famous the world over, and is often followed by the words ‘legend’, ‘icon’ and ‘freedom fighter’. His birthday is even a UN-backed international day.
So what is it, exactly, that he has achieved, and why are his struggles so widely celebrated? Check out the video below, produced by our friends at MTV Staying Alive back in 2003. Hosted by Beyonce and Kelly Rowland, this programme brings four young people to South Africa to talk to Nelson Mandela about some of the key issues affecting them and the world today: HIV, the Israeli/Palestinian conflict and the struggle for democracy in Burma.
